Many
people live with problems with their pets unaware that many problems
are quite simple to resolve resulting in a closer, more satisfying relationship
for both pet and owner.
Often through no fault of the owner, communication between owner and
pet can break down leading to all sorts of problems, these might range
from ‘control’ problems such as not coming when called or pulling on
the lead to more serious problems including fears and phobias and aggression.
Range of Behaviour problems:
There are as many potential problems as there are dogs and cats!
Common behaviour problems found amongst dogs include:
- Aggression
both towards other dogs and people
- Separation
problems
- Destructiveness
- Toileting
problems
- Excessive
barking
- Nervousness,
fears and phobias
- Excessive
territoriality
- Car
problems
- Livestock
chasing
- Self-mutilation
Common behaviour problems found amongst cats include:
- Toileting
including spraying and marking
- Aggression
- Problems
between cats in the same household
- Problems
with other cats in the neighbourhood
- Excessive
vocalisation
- Self-mutilation
These behaviours are normal behaviours for dogs and cats, only becoming
'problems' when they occur in inappropriate situations.
The
key to resolving these problems is to understand the motivation for
the behaviour from the animals' point of view. This allows for behaviour
therapy to take place in a 'language' the animal will understand using
modern reward based methods.
